The Neighbourhood

Where Ottawa Families Put Down Roots.

Barrhaven is south Ottawa's largest suburb, and its most consistently family-oriented community. Developed primarily from the 1980s onward, it offers a density of newer detached and semi-detached homes, wide streets, plentiful green space, and one of the city's most complete sets of family infrastructure: schools, recreation centres, parks, and shopping within reach of nearly every street.

The neighbourhood trades the walkability of central Ottawa for something different: space, quiet, and the kind of community cohesion that comes from families raising children in the same schools and parks for years at a time. Chapman Mills and Half Moon Bay are among the newer pockets with particularly strong demand.

Jockvale Road and Strandherd Drive form Barrhaven's commercial spine, big-box anchored but supplemented by an increasing number of local businesses. The community is large enough to have real amenities while remaining removed from the congestion and cost of central Ottawa.

What to Expect

Living in Barrhaven

Three things every Barrhaven buyer should understand before making a move.

Housing Stock

Predominantly detached and semi-detached homes from the 1990s through to current new builds. Buyers get more square footage per dollar than anywhere in central Ottawa. Executive detached homes in Stonebridge and Half Moon Bay command the upper end of the range.

Schools & Community

Barrhaven has one of Ottawa's most complete school networks, Catholic and public, French and English. Holy Trinity and Merivale High are among the well-regarded options. The Barrhaven Community Centre and multiple recreational facilities serve the neighbourhood year-round.

Commute & Access

Barrhaven is car-dependent for most residents, though the OC Transpo Transitway provides bus rapid transit to downtown. Future LRT connectivity is planned. Driving to downtown Ottawa takes 20-30 minutes outside of peak hours via the Queensway.
